Opel Astra (left) —> Buick Verano (right)
Opel Cascada (left) —> Buick Cascada (right)
While we're on the topic of the Cascada, the Buick Verano would have looked SO MUCH COOLER (to me, at least) if they had kept the Astra front fascia like the Buick Cascada did with the Opel Cascada. I know our crash regulations are different. Perhaps they wanted to appeal to an older demographic? Just doesn't add up...

Because for better or worse, Buick has its own design ethos and the Astra doesn't match it.

They were probably trying to make it as different as possible compared to the Opel.

The Cascada literally has a Buick badge stuck in the center of an Opel grill, clearly their image no longer is working or matters to them.

The Opel Cascada has a very similar front end to the Astra and Buick simply rebadged it (in terms of exterior appearance for the most part). Edit: added the Cascada pictures

There isn't enough car for the size of the grill.

Corporate grill yo. I dare you to tell what car this is off of.

My first guess would be Ford C-Max.

Hm, not bad. I assumed the C-Max was so forgettable people the first guess would have gone else where.

The front end of the normal Astra doesn't look "Buick-y" enough. The Cascada doesn't either, needs more waterfall grille.
Now, if Saturn was still around, the normal Astra would look perfect with juts a badge change.

Then you have the Regal, which basically looks like a midsize Astra.
The Verano isn't as sporty looking as the Regal or Cascada, I get that, but I've always liked the looks - it looks a lot bigger than it is. I think the Verano looked more like an aged midsize than an upmarket Cruze, which to Americans probably helped sales.
Likely GM trying to figure out if they wanted to actually make Buicks or just slap the name on Opels.

What's confusing is that the all new Astra J came out in 2009-2010 with these headlamps.
While earlier the Vauxhall/Opel Insignia aka Buick Regal came out looking like this in 2008
The Insignia had a facelift in 2013 to this
So although the Buick Verano/Excelle is a four door saloon car based on the five door hatchback Astra J it has the front end similar to the old Insignia and not like the Astra J.
Which is further confusing is the Buick Excelle in China is sold as a four door as the Excelle GT and five door as the Excelle yet they have different faces.
Excelle GT
Excelle
WHY?

FWIW, I saw someone driving a Buick with Opel Insignia badges around the GM RenCen yesterday.

This is why I wish Saturn was still around - all the cheaper Opels which we mostly don't get would have gone to them while the premium Opels would go to Buick.
